States of the Nation, an informal working title for a Road Trip, which started out as a holiday plan and then it deepened into something far more than just driving and taking in the scenery. The drive around USA bug started for me in the 1970’s when the music of East Coast and West Coast bands started to enter my music collection. I heard about all sorts of places, looked up things mentioned in the songs, found out where the bands came from or were playing. Places like Chicago, Brooklyn, San Francisco, Palm Springs, Salinas, Barstow, Phoenix, Yuma all became known to me on a map at least. As UK bands toured the US I would follow reviews and tour schedules discovering new places and as I did the desire to travel the routes of innumerable tour bus journeys began to take hold. When the opportunity first arose the question was “where to start?’ Truth be told I’d no idea, but places like Nashville, Memphis and somewhere called Muscle Shoals for some reason seemed to be good. Then came the epiphany moment ROUTE 66!, the song gave me the towns, the cities, the route, the history and there was lots, and I mean lots of guidebooks and information. I’d say it was around the early 1990’s that this happened, I’d got a house, a mortgage, a family and a job, so whatever and whenever would have to wait, and possibly for quite a while. The thing is the feeling that this was a necessary part of my life never ever went away.
So eventually in April 2006 we arrived in Chicago and picked up a shiny new Mustang Convertible. We had 15 days to get to LA and back for the flight home. Just over 7000 miles later a bug encrusted car was handed back to astonished Hertz staff.
Which brings us to today, again its Chicago as the start and end point, then head west and north for Oregon via parts of R66 that need a second look, Yellowstone, Glacier and a few other National Parks will be visited as we go, above all there is photography and interviews with whoever we find who’s happy to talk about life since G W Bush, the recession, the future and whatever comes to mind. Expect a little bit of video and hopefully a time-lapse of every 5 miles of the trip (thats 1 frame every 5 miles covered)
In addition, subject to friendly wi-fi links the pages here will be updated with pics and news of progress so that readers and subscribers can follow the intrepid explorers.
Since I first wrote this what seems a long time ago we have journeys far and wide visiting every US State apart from Hawaii and Alaska, traveling back every year except 2016 and taking different routes. The possibilities for the future are endless……..
