There is a childhood book I remember called We didn’t mean to go to sea. We didn’t mean to end up on dirt roads in the middle of the Henry Mountains Range, but we did after a visit to Natural Arches State Park, a ferry across Lake Powell and a short diversion that should have taken us to Cathedral Valley. Somehow a missed turn or signpost meant the dirt road became a mountain track with small rivers to ford and difficult terrain. Some 3 hours of driving at less than 20 mph in a car with road tyres on ATV style tracks we found a paved state road. Cathedral Valley may well be spectacular but the mountain tracks brought sights that only the most privileged will ever see.
